We have been learning about Character Traits in Science. We are taking a survey on inherited traits. We could use your help! Would you please take a minute to fill out our survey so that we have more data? Thank you so much!

We welcomed PI day by learning about what our teacher calls "the secret of circles". We read the book Sir Cumference and the dragon of PI and then we experimented on our own with different size circles and different materials for measuring circumference and diameter. We tried yarn, pipe cleaners, ribbon, and even string licorice! We discovered that no matter the size of the circle the length of the yarn always went three times and a little more across the center of the circle! We then worked on mastering our measuring skills. We learned that we have to be careful when we line up our rulers or our measurements won't be accurate. We found that when we measured accurately our circumference divided by our diameter was always close to three! We had to work together for this project and found that it helped to have extra hands and eyes to get the measurements right. We had a lot of other fun activities to celebrate the day! Puzzles, games, etc. It was a fun day of learning.
We went on an exciting field trip today to see Shrek the Musical at the Palace Theater. It was a very funny show. The costumes were great and the singing and dancing was fabulous! The message was even better. Be yourself, we are all unique and that's a good thing! Madisyn's favorite character was princess Fiona. Her favorite part was when she turned into an ogre. Andrew liked Shrek and Donkey. His favorite part was when Shrek was making a fire with Fiona. Makayla's favorite character was Cinderella. Her favorite part was when the whole cast was singing and dancing at the end , to "I'm a Believer"! Brianna's favorite character was Fiona. Her favorite part was when she turned into an Ogre. Noel's favorite character was Donkey! We liked all the songs, but this is one of Mrs. Tharp's favorites. It is not from the performance that we saw, but it is still a good video. It really reinforces the message of the show! It is time to take up the blogging challenge! Are you up for it? If so be sure to get your introduction up do date on your blog and get the badge for this challenge. Check the challenge website and our blog regularly so that you'll know the details of each new challenge. I can't wait to see what is ahead for us! Check out the Student List and start to visit other student's blogs. Remember the rules for leaving quality comments. You can also visit different Class blogs from other classes participating in the challenge. Let's see how many new friends we can make this spring and learn together!
We are going to start reading The One and Only Ivan with a couple of other class and we are so excited! All we know is that it is about a silverback gorilla. We know 2 classes that will be reading with us. Mrs. McManus and her class is in Texas and Mr. McMillan and his class are in Australia! How cool will this be! We are really looking forward to learning with them! We are going to start keeping track of the things that we know about Gorillas and the things that we learn about them. We are glad to share our learning with you!
We had a visit from some amazing primates last week! We learned a lot about what they like to eat, how they live, and why they act the way they do. We took a lot of pictures and are just finishing a video which we will add below as soon as it is finished. The amazing thing about this assembly was that we invited Ms. Bauer's class in South Carolina, and Mrs. You's class in Ontario to join us using google hangouts! Our teacher used her phone to send the video to the other classes. The whole time we were wondering if they could really see and hear it very well. It was so fun to get a tweet from Ms. Bauer that included a picture of her class watching on their promethean board! It was cool to see our gym and guest speaker coming through to them! We are so glad that she always remembers to take pictures! Our teacher says these teachers are great because they are always willing to take risks and try new things to help their students! It was a very exciting day! Makayla made a video using pictures and videos that she and Mrs. Vought took. Enjoy! This year we participated in the Hour of Code! Here are some of our thoughts. Makayla: I liked to learn how to make the game. I liked the videos too. I also liked my friend's scratch game. Madisyn: I like the hour of code. I finished the angry birds and plants vs . zombies lessons. I wrote 77 lines of code. I did like it so much. It was easy to play on my computer, I did it 3 times. Dannielle: I like learning the Hour of Code because it was fun learning how to make your own code. I like all the bright colors that you can use. Raiden:I thought the hour of code was awesome. I liked the Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. It was a great experience! 45 students and 15 staff participated, writing a total of over 6,000 lines of code! Some of the students liked it so much that they are learning more through Code.org's Computer Science curriculum with Mrs. Tharp. We can't wait to see where this new adventure takes us! Fun Update: We have recently learned that our superintendent completed the hour of code too! Thank you for joining us in our learning Dr. Godshall!
We had a great chat with Ms. Roeder's class in NYC! We both took part in the Global read aloud and we tried to Skype for weeks, but had trouble scheduling it. We were able to do a twitter chat together (@PCSlibrary) and that was really fun. We read each others blogs, but we still wanted to talk. Finally it worked out! Even though the global read aloud was finished we still talked about our favorite parts of the book. We had fun telling them about our side of the state. They were the first class that we Skyped with in NY! We found that we liked some of the same kinds of music and the same books. They were really nice and we hope that we can talk to them again.
We had an amazing opportunity to watch a live interview with Sharon Draper, author of Out Of My Mind. We have been reading the book with thousands of students around the world. We were all able to ask questions through a google form put together by Mrs. Ripp. We all asked a question and waited to see if any would be answered. It was amazing to see Mrs. Ripp and Mrs. Draper! So many of our questions were answered! We also tweeted in more questions as we listened and thought of other things that we wanted to know. Mrs. Cobb's class joined us and they had some great questions too. We all had a great time! Thank you so much Mrs. Ripp and Mrs. Draper! Ms. Cypert's Class We had another great Skype call with Ms. Cypert's class this week! We all wrote about something that we would be willing to give up all of our free time to achieve. We also had to say why we'd choose that, and how it would make the world a better place. In the book we are reading together the main character Melody spends all of her time getting ready for the Wiz Kids Competition. We shared our goals and dreams with each other. It was fun to hear what they are working hard to achieve. Mrs. Cobb's class joined us and they shared their goals too. It is so much fun to connect this way. We really like Ms. Cypert's class, it is so huge! They are good writers and they leave us great comments that make us think. We enjoy learning with them! Thank you! Mr. Boylen's Class
We also had an chance to Skype with Mr. Boylen's class. We were having a wild wind storm here so the connection was a little rocky at first, but it got better. It was our first Skype with them. They live in Iowa. We learned something interesting that we have in common. In our class we come from many different communities to learn together. This is a bit unusual. We learned that the students in Mr. Boylen's class come from several different communities too! We all have long bus rides to and from school each day. Their parents have to do a lot of driving just like ours! Mr. Boylen had 2 classes back to back. A few of us stayed to talk to his second class for a little while. Our teacher said that next time we could work it out so we could talk to both classes. Thank You! |
